How to become a Substitute Teacher

Thank you for your interest in substitute teaching with us!
To get started, you’ll need a valid Missouri substitute teaching certificate. Here’s how:


Steps to Become a Substitute Teacher

1. Get Your Missouri Substitute Certificate

  • Apply online at: www.dese.mo.gov

  • Pay a $50 processing fee

  • Follow the steps in the Educator Certification System Help Guide

2. Send Your Transcripts

  • Mail original transcripts (no scans or copies) to:
    Educator Certification, P.O. Box 480, Jefferson City, MO 65102-0480

  • Include your Social Security Number or Educator ID

3. Don’t Have 60 College Credit Hours?

  • You can take a 20-hour online course instead: Click here

4. Fingerprint & Background Check

5. Register with the Family Care Safety Registry

6. Apply with Penmac Staffing

  • Submit your application: www.penmac.com

  • Schedule an appointment with Penmac in Lebanon

  • Driver’s License

  • Second ID (Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, or Passport)

  • Transcripts (official or unofficial)

  • Missouri Substitute Certificate
