Medication Administered at School

Whenever possible, medication should be given at home to avoid interruptions in the school day. However, some must be taken during school hours. To ensure safe administration at school, please follow the procedures listed below. School personnel can administer prescription or over-the-counter medications during school hours with parent permission. 

All Buildings

Parents or guardians must deliver all medications in the original container. A medication administration form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Prescription medication must be provided in a pharmacy-labeled container. Parent/guardian should request from the pharmacist a duplicate labeled bottle for the prescription if it will need to be given at home and school.  The first dose will not be given at school. Dosage adjustments will require a note from the physician unless it’s a new label.

• Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container.  Label directions will be followed for dosing without a doctor’s note stating otherwise. 
• Check the expiration dates of the medication(s). Expired medications will not be administered.
• No supplements or essential oils will be distributed without physician order. 

Any remaining medication must be picked up by a parent or designated adult at the end of the school year, as medications will not be sent home with students.  Any medication not picked up will be disposed of.

Self-Administration Medications

High school students only are permitted to self-carry a single dose (1-2 tablets) of over-the-counter medication. 

Self-Administration of Medication Authorization Form is required to be completed annually for self-carry and self-administration medications. By completing this form, the parent/guardian is not requesting school personnel to store or administer the medication to the student. Parent/guardian will ensure the medication will be properly labeled for the student. 

• Prescription asthma inhaler for asthma or reactive airway disease. A parent/guardian’s written authorization and a review by RN with the student is required. 
• Epinephrine or other medication. A physician’s order, parent/guardian written authorization, and a review by RN with the student is required. 

The district may revoke a student’s privilege to self-carry a medication if it is determined the student is misusing or abusing this privilege.
